A Heartrending Farewell
Letters of Love in the Shadow of War — Part Nine
Read her last letter here:
My Dearest Evelyn,
It is with a heavy heart and a trembling hand that I pen this letter to you, bearing news of unimaginable sorrow. It falls upon me, as James’s commanding officer, to deliver the heart-wrenching truth of his passing. James fought valiantly in the treacherous jungles of North Africa, but it was not the bullets of war that claimed his life. No, my dear, it was a cruel twist of fate, a relentless tropical virus that ravaged his body and extinguished the flame of his vibrant spirit.
In his final days, as the fever gripped him, James cried out your name in delirium. His fevered words echoed through the makeshift hospital, a haunting melody of love and longing. In moments of fleeting clarity, he dictated fragments of this letter, a testament to his unwavering devotion to you. His voice, weakened and frail, whispered the words that his heart carried until his last breath, “Evelyn, I love you.”
